Peals, Chimes & Carillons

Music can be played on cast bells when there is a sufficient number of bells in the correct tunings.  Bells grouped for this purpose are known variously as Peals, Chimes and Carillons, depending on numbers and tunings.  The most basic is the Peal, which is anything under eight bells.  Musically, a three bell peal can be tuned to sound the first, third and fifth notes of a major chord.

A Chime is anything nine to twenty-two bells, usually arranged in a diatonic scale, enabling tunes to be played in a variety of keys.  A Carillon is composed of at least twenty three bells, spanning two octaves, at minimum.  Any of these bells can be played with systems ranging from digital keyboards to rope pulls.
